Year 1
Family Learning 2026-2027
Year One Family Learning
It has been wonderful to welcome our Year 1 parents and carers into school for another Family Learning session this week. These special mornings each Wednesday provide a lovely opportunity for families to learn alongside their children, discover more about what they are learning in school and share in the joy of their achievements. Thank you to all of our families who joined us – your support and partnership make such a positive difference to your child’s learning journey. I can already see the difference this is making to your child’s outcomes, behaviour, progress and learning. If any Year 1 family member wishes to join please see Mrs Coldman.
Art - Exploring Lines with Music
The children enjoyed learning about the artist, Paul Klee. He created over 10,000 paintings and drawings. He used different lines, shapes and colours to create very interesting pieces of art work. He loved music and often played the violin before he painted. We used his love of music and his quote 'A line is a dot that went for a walk' to inspire our work. We listened to four different pieces of music as we explored different types of lines. We experimented with different pressures and different types of media. Some of our movements were big whilst others were small. What a wonderful afternoon of creativity and exploration. Well done, Year 1.

RE - Creation Kennings
We looked at artwork and reflected on how the artist was showing that everything was created by God. We then listened to a creation kenning where the poet reflected on their favourite parts of creation. The children then shared their own ideas about their favourite things. We thought about how we could combine words in the style of a kenning to describe our favourite parts of creation. What an amazing job we did. Take a look at the work of our Year 1 poets below!

RE - Mark 10 Mission Day
Year One were delighted to have a very special visitor this week. Greg from The Mark 10 Mission lead our “Celebration of the Word”
both as a whole school and within our Year One classroom. We gathered together as a whole school and reflected on Matthew's gospel, reflecting upon the message of forgiveness.
In our classroom we listened carefully to the Gospel story of “The Good Shepherd”. We reflected on how Jesus is our Good Shepherd, who loves, guides and cares for each one of us. The children then joined in traditional prayers, taking a quiet moment to reflect and think about how we can follow Jesus and show His love to others through our words and actions each day. It was a beautiful time of prayer, reflection and celebration as we continue our journey of “Growing together on a journey with Jesus”.

Art - Drawing Lines
Our first Art topic of the year is drawing. We began by looking at the work of Bridget Riley. She used lines to create lots of different effects and some of them made us feeling like the lines were moving - How clever! We investigated the different types of lines we could create. thinking carefully about our pencil grip and control. Then we grouped these by drawing them under 6 headings - straight, curved, zig-zag, dotted, dashed and waved. We really enjoyed our first art lesson!

RE - Learning about the story of Creation
Our first RE topic this year is Creation and Covenant. To begin our topic we looked at a picture of the Earth and thought about what we could see. We heard that God made the world and everything in it in the very first book in the Bible - Genesis. We thought about what God made and how wonderful our world is. We then worked hard, using our RE display as support, to sequence the story of creation. What little stars you are, Year 1.

Our First Day of Year 1
All of Year 1 were little superstars on their first day back at school today. They had lots of fun exploring their new classroom and seeing all of their friends. We can't wait to see everything they will achieve this year as they continue their learning journey.
