Growing together on a journey with Jesus

Year 3

Our Year 3 School Council Representatives 2025-2026

I was truly amazed by the fantastic science projects the children completed at home. Their creativity, curiosity, and enthusiasm for learning were evident in every project shared. It was wonderful to see such thoughtful ideas and careful effort put into exploring scientific concepts. I would also like to extend a sincere thank you to all the parents and families who supported the children with their projects. Your time, encouragement, and guidance made a real difference, and it was clear that the children greatly benefited from your involvement. Together, you helped create a meaningful and inspiring learning experience for everyone.

Science Week 2026

Curiosity: What’s your question?
Year Three were all filled with curiosity as we took part in our eagerly anticipated Science Week. I have been blown away by the first-hand experimentation, curious questions and budding Scientists in action.

Mad Science Workshop with Cosmic Curls! (Wednesday 11th March)

Year 3 had an exciting visit from the Mad Science Company, led by Cosmic Curls! The children took part in a fun and interactive workshop that helped bring their learning about light to life. Through engaging demonstrations and hands-on exploration, the pupils deepened their understanding of reflection and refraction, discovering how light can bounce off surfaces and bend as it travels through different materials. The session sparked lots of curiosity and enthusiasm, and the children asked fantastic scientific questions as they explored these fascinating concepts. It was a brilliant way to enhance our science learning and inspire our young scientists!

Come and explore our Science Experiment with us!

Science Investigation: Which material creates the most slippery surface for a toy car?

We investigated which surface is the most slippery using a toy car and a ramp made from books. First, we covered the ramp with different materials: foil, fabric, felt, rigid cardboard, wood and paper. We released the toy car from the same place at the top of the ramp each time and made sure the ramp stayed the same height so that it was a fair test. We measured how far the car travelled along the floor for each surface. This helped us compare which material was the most slippery and which created the most friction. We recorded our results and looked to see which surface allowed the car to travel the furthest. Year 3 were amazing at describing their observations using scientific language. Well done Year 3!

Year 3 had a wonderful time celebrating World Book Day! The children arrived in a fantastic range of creative costumes, bringing their favourite characters and stories to life. We are incredibly grateful to families for the amazing effort put into the outfits, which helped the children truly immerse themselves in a world of stories and imagination. Throughout the day, the class enjoyed sharing books, talking about their favourite characters and celebrating the joy of reading together. It was a lovely day that reminded us all how magical books can be.

National Archives Treasures Workshop - Thursday 26th February 2026

Year 3 had an exciting opportunity to take part in a special history workshop with The National Archives. During the session, pupils explored what makes a document from the past a real “treasure” and discovered that value is not always about gold or glitter, but about the stories historical sources can tell us. Through careful observation and discussion, the children investigated a range of fascinating original documents, including a Tudor wax seal, a telegram sent to mark the Moon Landing and a Victorian child’s prison record. Led by an experienced history educator, the highly interactive workshop encouraged pupils to ask questions, share ideas and develop their enquiry skills while learning how historians study and interpret sources from the past.

I was so impressed by the children's insightful, concise questions in response to the historical artefacts we explored. Well done Year 3!

World Book Day 2026

On Friday 6th March, we invited our school community to celebrate World Book Day at St Anthony’s.

This year, our theme is ‘Bring a book, take a book!’ As always, the more our community involves themselves in World Book Day, the more fun and exciting it will be! Our Celebration Assembly with our whole school community is a wonderful opportunity to see the different costumes on display and to feel part this important event. During the day, Year 3 brought alive their learning around reading. Ask the children all about it!

The Cave Workshop - Alive & Kicking

Still image for this video

Year 3 had an unforgettable start to their Stone Age topic when they took part in an exciting workshop delivered by the theatre company Alive & Kicking. The children were transported back in time as they stepped into a mysterious cave, using their imaginations to leave the modern world behind. Through immersive storytelling, they discovered what life was like thousands of years ago — from hunting and gathering to surviving the harsh elements. The experience was brought to life even further as the children explored cave paintings, just like early humans, using symbols and natural colours to tell stories. It was a fantastic, hands-on way to spark curiosity and enthusiasm for learning about the Stone Age. I cannot wait to delve deeper into this topic with you Year 3, what an incredible start we have made!

Mrs Gledhill

I cannot put into words just how proud I am of Year 3 for their incredible performance of the 'Bee Musical'. Every single child danced and performed with confidence and shone like the little stars they are. It was overwhelming to see the hall light up with smiles and happiness as the children delivered their lines. Please may I pass a huge thank you to yourselves as parents too, as the children's costumes were amazing and truly added to the overall performance. Your support is truly valued and appreciated not only by myself as their teacher, but I know by your wonderful children also.

What a day it was to Bee-Happy!

Reading at Home: Asking Questions to Deepen Understanding

Our current reading focus in class is helping children learn to ask questions as they read, in order to deepen their understanding of a text. You can support this important skill at home by encouraging discussion and curiosity during shared reading time. Here are some simple and effective ways you can help:

Pause and wonder together – encourage your child to ask questions such as “Why did that happen?” or “What do you think might happen next?”

Ask open-ended questions – use prompts like “How do you think the character is feeling?” or “What would you do in that situation?”

Model questioning – share your own questions aloud to show that good readers think as they read.

Look closely at illustrations – discuss pictures and ask what clues they give about the story.

Encourage predictions – ask your child to predict what might happen and explain their reasoning.

Revisit tricky parts – if something is confusing, encourage your child to ask questions and reread together.

Celebrate curiosity – reassure your child that there are no “wrong” questions and that wondering helps us become better readers.

Thank you for your continued support at home—it makes a real difference to your child’s reading development!

Year 3 Assembly: Growing Together on our journey with Jesus!

Year 3 growing on a journey with Jesus:

Our Year 3 class were buzzing as they performed their class assembly in February 2026. It was centred around our mission statement of “Growing together on a journey with Jesus.” The children celebrated friendship as well as the power of working together as they blossomed sharing their story with the whole school community. I have never seen our school hall so full! Thank you to all our Year 3 parents who came to support. I was blown away by the remarkable and exceptional level of acting, singing and reflection Year 3. Well done and I look forward to seeing you demonstrating your key messages through your words and actions this Lent. God bless you all! Huge thanks to Mrs Gledhill, Mrs O’Neill, Mrs Cecil and Mrs Gallagher for guiding our Year 3 children on their journey through St Anthony’s and preparing them so well.

Mindmate Managing Emotions Workshop - Wednesday 11th February 2026

Year 3 recently enjoyed a visit from the MindMate team, who talked to the children about recognising and managing their emotions. The session focused on understanding different feelings and learning simple regulation techniques to help stay calm and positive. The children took part in thoughtful discussions and practical activities, sharing ideas about what helps them when emotions feel overwhelming. To finish the visit, everyone created their own Five Ways to Keep Calm Hands, giving them useful strategies to take back to the classroom and beyond.

Well done Year 3!

RE - Drama (How can we follow in the footsteps of Jesus, The Teacher?)

In RE lessons, Year 3 took part in a drama activity where they were given different scenarios and asked to consider how they could be ambassadors of faith by following in the footsteps of Jesus’ teachings. Working in groups, the children explored a range of themes, including situations where children might feel lonely, upset, or worried. They thoughtfully discussed how Jesus would respond and how they could show kindness, compassion, and care through their own words and actions. The groups acted out their dramas beautifully, and all children clearly recognised the key message of living out Jesus’ teachings in everyday life.

I am so proud of you all Year 3, keep shining brightly in all that you do!

Our Beautiful Advent Display

Throughout Advent, we enjoyed coming together to share special moments of reflection and celebration. The children took part in prayers, discussions and activities that helped them understand the meaning of the season and prepare their hearts for Christmas. We warmly invite you to come and look at our beautiful display pictures, which capture these meaningful celebrations and the wonderful work created by the children.

Elf Day in Year 3 2025

Still image for this video
Year 3 had a truly magical Elf Day filled with festive cheer and excitement from start to finish. The children took part in a wide range of creative crafts, making seasonal decorations and enjoying hands-on activities that sparked lots of imagination. There was plenty of fun and laughter throughout the day as pupils embraced the Christmas spirit together. A very special highlight was a surprise visit from Santa, which delighted the children and made the day feel extra special. Elf Day was a wonderful celebration and a memorable experience for everyone involved!

Year 3 Amazing Inference!

Year 3 pupils recently watched The Dream Giver short animation and were magically surprised with a mysterious dream egg! Inside the egg were a series of clues about a hidden dream. The children worked together to carefully infer what the dream might be about and who would enjoy it, using the evidence from the clues to support their ideas. They did an amazing job justifying their inferences, explaining their thinking clearly and confidently. It was wonderful to see such enthusiastic and thoughtful learning in action.

Inferencing is the skill of using clues from a text, along with what we already know, to work out information that isn’t directly stated. When children make inferences, they “read between the lines” to understand characters’ feelings, motivations, and what might happen next. This helps them become deeper, more thoughtful readers and improves their overall comprehension.

Below, you can find some example questions to discuss with your child when reading at home, which will support their inference skills:

  • How do you think the character was feeling at this point in the story? What makes you think that?

  • What clues in the text tell you where the story is taking place?

  • Why do you think the character didn’t tell anyone the secret?

  • What can you infer about the character’s personality from their actions?

  • Why do you think the setting is important to the story?

  • What is the weather like in the story? What clues can you find in the text or images to support this?

  • What might the character be thinking when this happened?

  • How do you think the situation will change after this event?

  • What does the author want us to understand without directly telling us?

  • What clues help you infer what might happen next?

Happy reading Year 3!

RE: Making Advent Wreaths - December 2025

Year 3 had a fantastic time celebrating Culture and Heritage Day 2025! The children came to school dressed in wonderful outfits representing their family cultures, proudly sharing the stories and traditions that make their backgrounds so special. They loved giving presentations about their own cultural heritage and were so excited to tell their friends all about their family history. It was a joyful day filled with colour, learning, and pride. Mrs Gledhill would like to say a huge thank you to all the parents for their amazing support in helping the children prepare for this special celebration — your efforts made the day truly memorable!

St Anthony's - Artists in Action

Year 3 were thrilled to welcome the famous Leeds artist, the Burley Banksy, for an inspiring art workshop! The children had a wonderful time learning about his creative street art and how he celebrates the local community through his designs. Inspired by his work, the pupils created their own colourful pieces to celebrate their own heritage, expressing their unique backgrounds and stories through art. It was a fantastic day full of creativity, teamwork, and pride—and the children loved every moment spent with the Burley Banksy! It was a particularly special day for Mrs Gledhill too, as the Burley Banksy used to be her old primary school teacher! What a wonderful time celebrating our personal stories through artwork - well done Year 3!

Adventure Awaits in Year Three!

In Year Three we begin to soar,
With braver steps than ever before.
We zip our bags and tie our shoes,
And start to make our own wise moves.

We read new books and take a peek,
At heroes bold and creatures meek.
With every page, our minds will grow,
To places only books can show!

We’ll dive through history, numbers, and more,
And science will open a magical door.
We'll paint, we'll build, explore the skies,
Ask big questions and wonder “Why?”

Independence grows each day,
As we learn, laugh, and lead the way.
Year Three's a journey, bright and new—
And the biggest explorer is you!
