He was sat on block of ice with a letter inside it. We waited until the ice had melted and read the letter. It was explaining that Santa had left him for us so we could show him how to be a good elf. We also wrote letters to Santa and read them to him. We made decorations for our workshop and finished our day with hot chocolate and marshmallows! smileyWelcome to Year 1!smiley

Welcome! I can’t believe how busy we have been in our first week back to Year 1! I have been so impressed and you have made me very proud already. Thank you to all the parents that came to the meet the teacher meetings. You have all made me feel so welcomed as a new member of the St Anthony’s community and I look forward to getting to know you even more. My door is always open and I am always here for anything you may need!

Below I have outlined a few things which will help you along the way this year:

* PE lessons usually take place on Tuesday and Thursday. Please remember that your PE kit must be in school at all times in case these days change or we have another exciting activities planned. The indoor kit is as follows: White top and black shorts. Outdoor kit: Black tracksuit, white top and trainers.

* Practise your spellings at home each day. The spellings follow the patterns we are learning in class and really will enable your children to develop an embedded understanding of the spelling patterns. We follow a 'look, cover, write, check' method, which should help you at home. Spelling tests take place on a Friday.

* Read at home every night and discuss what you have read in great detail (such as making predictions about what may happen next, discussing the characters and linking what has been read to own experiences).

* Come to school every day ready to learn! The doors open at 8.35am and registration begins at 8.45am.

I am so impressed with what you can do already and how clever, kind and determined you all are. Let’s learn and grow together this year and make sure we are shining like the superstars we are!

Kind regards,

Miss Murphy

What a fantastic first week we have had in Year 1! Thank you to all those who attended the meet the teacher meetings, it was wonderful to get to know you all better. I am very much looking forward to another fun-filled year with Year 1! I have planned lots of exciting topics to help you all achieve wonderful things this year.

Below I have outlined a few things which will help you along the way this year:

Going for Gold Week 2016

Still image for this video
We have recently enjoyed participating in our 'Going for Gold' week. Throughout this week we learned all about fitness, the importance of being healthy, the Olympics and also how to strengthen our existing sports skills as well as exploring new sports. Each class has a focus country and our country was...the USA! From this, we explored a variety of different American sports, such as hockey, basketball, baseball and American football. We also looked at the Olympics and researched a variety of inspirational Olympians. During the week, we took part in so many different sports to keep us healthy including tennis, football, javelin throw, salsa and we even had our own mini-olympics. We took part in a fitness session with Antony Newby, where we worked in teams to get fit as well as have lots of fun! A highlight of the week was when we learnt how to balance on a bike...a skill for life! It was a bit tricky and scary at first but every child pushed themselves to reach new goals, well done Year 1! We had lots of fun keeping active, healthy and fit throughout our 'Going for Gold' week...take a look at some of our pictures.

Easter in Year 1 - 2016

Still image for this video
During our time preparing for Easter, we engaged in lots of fun, exciting activities as well as participating in times of reflection and prayer. We are not often in school after the Easter weekend, and so we were extremely fortunate to be able to celebrate this special time together. The whole school participated in a "Creative RE day", where we looked at different representations of the Resurrection, and began to formulate some ideas of our own about what the Resurrection means to us. Take a look at some of our pictures over the Easter period in Year 1...

Marvellous Monarchs Week - February 2016

Still image for this video
Take a look at our wonderful pictures from our special Marvellous Monarchs week, where we explored and celebrated significant British Monarchs! We had many special visitors in, including Henry VIII and a rather noisy Town Crier! Year 1 focused on Queen Victoria and looked at what life would be like for a child in the Victorian era. We explored different toys and jobs that the children had all that time ago. This prepared us for our trip to Abbey House Museum! The school had a Royal Bake Off competition...we enjoyed looking at all the wonderful entries, a huge well done to everybody who took part! Throughout the week, we explored our current Royal Family and looked at royal castles and palaces. To finish our exciting week off, KS1 had a Royal Banquet where we shared in a great feast in our incredible costumes. We played party games, enjoyed royal dancing and listened to royal music. Thankyou to all parents who generously donated party food for this celebration...it is very much appreciated and the children had a wonderful time! Take a look at our photographs from the week.

Abbey House Museum and Kirkstall Abbey - February 2016

Still image for this video
On Tuesday 9th February 2016, Year 1 visited Abbey House Museum. Within the museum, we explored old Victorian streets and learned so much about what life was like under the rule of Queen Victoria. Within the streets we saw toy shops, a Victorian school, workshops, Victorian clothing, a hairdressers and many more. We were able to dress up in Victorian clothing and hats which was lots of fun! We then took part in a workshop titled "Comparing Queen Victoria to a significant other". We further explored our current monarchy and compared how our current Queen Elizabeth is similar/different to Queen Victoria. Afterwards, we visited Kirkstall Abbey...we were very lucky with the weather it was a cold, yet beautiful day! We explored the Abbey and considered its awe inspiring characteristics. Take a look at some of our pictures from the day!

Christmas 2015

Still image for this video
In Year 1 at St Anthony's we celebrated the Christmas period by sharing in celebration and reflection with our friends. We performed our Christmas nativity "A Miracle in Town!" with confidence...we really enjoyed dressing up in our special costumes! Each and every child shone like a star, they are a real credit to you all. For our Christmas party, we wore our own clothes, watched Frozen, played pass the parcel, had a mini-disco, enjoyed Christmas colouring and played with lots of toys! We joined in singing to Christmas carols whilst we had fun together. On our party day, we also had a visit from a very special person...Santa! We sung him a Christmas song and in return he gave us all an early Christmas present! On Tuesday 15th December, we shared a traditional Christmas dinner. To prepare for our dinner we all made special party hats which looked like reindeers and Christmas trees. We sat with our class, pulled Christmas crackers and shared in lots of jokes and laughter. At the end of the term we took part in a seasonal winter walk around the school grounds. We looked for signs of winter and collected together "winter items".

Take a look at some of our pictures...

Our Journey of Faith Week

Still image for this video
We celebrated our Journey of Faith week with enthusiasm, curiosity and time for meaningful reflection. On the first day, we learnt all about our class saint, St Columba and his history. During the rest of the week we explored not only our own faith, but also the Jewish Faith. We had a special delivery in our class, which was a request for us to discover all about Judiasm. Throughout the week, we had an exciting visit to the Jewish Heritage Center for Children where we visited a synagogue, went shopping for Kosher food and learnt all about the Jewish way of life. Upon returning to school, we had so many new experiences and had grown in our knowledge tremendously. Throughout the rest of the week we uncovered facts about Judaism, explored the Torah, discovered what happens at a Jewish wedding and were recognising and identifying symbols of Judaism. At the end of the week we made latkes, a traditional Jewish food eaten on Shabbat. We enjoyed eating the Jewish foods and celebrated all we had learnt about our new faith together as a class. We had lots of fun and learnt so many new things all about the Jewish faith, which we then compared to our own personal faiths. Take a look at some of our pictures from the week!
